Hi, Ellen, is a precise time and place really necessary for a novel’s set up? If I remember correctly, The Perks of Being a Wallflower does not provide either of these in the novel (making only vague allusions to a geographical region and time period), and it was a published success. I’m writing a contemporary fiction novel and it doesn’t seem important to me to include these things because it’s generally relevant to the present day and any suburban town. Further clarification would be appreciated. Thank you for your wonderful videos and articles.

The location doesn’t need t be precise. It depends on the book. The reader should have a clear sense of the type of location (small town vs. big city vs. seaside village) even if the exact location isn’t specified. I hope this helps!
